I didn’t realise how much I needed to hear silence until I watched this. I Hear the Sunspot (2024) gives space to things left unsaid—the pauses, the awkward hesitations, the tremble in a voice when someone’s finally being seen. And that’s the magic of this series—it doesn’t try too hard. It just feels.

Taichi is still that loud, chaotic sunshine who crashes into Kohei’s carefully built walls. And Kohei, with his quiet sorrow and heavy silences, draws you in without even trying. Their connection builds so organically—glances, gestures, moments where the world around them fades and you just feel the intensity of what they’re not saying. It’s a story about understanding. Not fixing, not saving—just being there.

But once again—they gave us crumbs. Only one volume adapted. Just like the 2017 film. Just like the manga tease. WHY do Japanese BL dramas keep doing this to us?! The series was lovely, don’t get me wrong—but I was ready to see deeper intimacy, emotional growth, the raw vulnerability from later volumes. Instead, it ended right when my heart was finally settling into their rhythm.

The pacing was soft, the acting sincere (Kohei’s pain especially felt lived in), and the sound design? Beautiful. The use of ambient sound and silence was done with care—you really hear what Kohei hears, or doesn’t hear, and it brings you into his world without pity or dramatics. That was such a win for disability representation.

Final thoughts:
Watch it for the warmth, the softness, and the start of something special. But if you're like me and fall in love with these two... prepare to scream into the void when the credits roll. And then go find the manga. Because honestly? You’ll need the rest of their story.
