I went into Top Form curious, and came out shocked by how much I loved it. To be honest, I had a lot of hesitations because this was adapted from Dakaretai Otoko Ichii ni Odosarete Imasu—a manga (and anime) I could never fully embrace because of its problematic elements, especially around consent and power imbalance.
But Top Form? They fixed it.
They completely rewrote the dynamic with maturity, empathy, and so much more emotional nuance. The toxic elements from the source are stripped away, and in their place, we get a relationship that grows from rivalry to respect to a love so genuine it left me breathless.
And the casting… oh my god. Smart and Boom were not just good—they were perfect. They brought the anime characters to life, but not in a cosplay or caricature way. They embodied them. The tension, the smirks, the tenderness—they felt like Takato and Junta, but reimagined with soul. I could watch Smart deliver sharp lines and Boom look at him with heart-eyes forever.
Every scene was polished and meaningful. The showbiz backdrop was kept sleek and relevant without overpowering the emotional core. Their romance unfolded like a slow, steady burn—with none of the coercion, and all of the mutual yearning. Consent, communication, chemistry—this show nailed it all.
Final thoughts:
This is how you do an adaptation. You take something flawed, and you build something better. Top Form didn’t just redeem the source—it elevated it. I didn’t expect a full 10/10, but I’m giving it with all my heart. Watch it. Watch it for the love, for the brilliance, and for SmartBoom absolutely devouring the screen.
