The Summer Hikaru Died
The Summer Hikaru Died – 10/10
Now this is exactly my kind of anime. It hits that perfect intersection of psychological horror, body horror, and emotional intensity and on top of that, the subtle homoerotic tension just elevates everything even more. It’s such a rare combination, and this series executes it beautifully. At first, I’ll admit, it was a bit confusing. The narrative doesn’t spoon-feed you anything it just drops you into this eerie, unsettling world and lets the discomfort slowly build. But instead of pushing me away, that confusion pulled me in even deeper, because this is exactly the kind of storytelling I’m drawn to. The atmosphere is creepy as hell quiet, suffocating, and constantly on edge. There’s this lingering sense that something is deeply wrong, and the body horror elements only make it more disturbing. But what truly makes it stand out is how it balances that horror with grief and love.
At its core, this isn’t just a horror story it’s about loss and the terrifying idea of holding on to someone even when you know they’re no longer the same. That desperate, almost painful attachment… the refusal to accept reality… it makes the relationship feel intense, unsettling, and deeply emotional all at once. It’s horrifying, yes — but it’s also heartbreaking.
A rare kind of anime that doesn’t just scare you, but stays with you emotionally.
Absolutely fantastic, and I’m already waiting eagerly for Season 2.
